If we want to talk to other organizations about leadership and sustainability, it seems only right that we have thought about our own leadership and sustainability efforts. HBI's commitment to Sustainable Development is comprised of a deep longing to make the world a better place to live both from an environmental perspective and from the persepctive of serving the local and global community.

Environmental 

  1. We are committed to keeping to home based employees, utilizing local service organizations and using virtual assistance whenever possible.
  2. We encourage car-pooling to meetings and gatherings and often teleconference.
  3. We use renewable electric energy for our office locations through Bullfrog Power.
  4. We are ruthlessly committed to recycling and consciously avoid excess packaging.
  5. We avoid the use of platic drinking bottles for water.
  6. We have replaced all lighting with compact florescent where ever practicable.
  7. We have replaced the office thermostat with a smart thermostat from Ontario Hydro.
  8. We keep our thermostat at 20 during the winter and 24 during the summer to reduce energy consumption (except when visitors are planned).
  9. We do our utmost to properly recycle and where possible encourage reuse of older computer equipment
  10. We have performed an energy audit and are beginning the process of doing energy upgrades.

Social

We participate in a variety of organizations which donate to local charities and serve on Boards and in other capicities in various community groups. We are committed to deepening our community involvement through our local Sustainability and Economic Development efforts and working with local business in developing their vision of a Sustainable world. We also are committed to sharing concepts which emphasize the oneness of humanity and the need for education throughout the world. We have also invested in helping other world communities.

Future Commitments

  1. We are committed to upgrading our efficiency in natural gas consumption over the next calendar year through the purchase of a high efficiency furnace, additional insulation and leak checks in our home location. (in progress)
  2. Over the next two years (by Dec 2010) we are committed to purchasing more fuel efficient Vehicles.
  3. Long term considerations include plug-in electric hybrids, solar power as they become practical and generally available.
